Business email comparison

Fastmail wins on focused email. Proton wins when privacy is the operating requirement.

These are not two versions of the same product. Fastmail optimises a conventional email-and-calendar workflow. Proton builds email into a privacy-first encrypted service suite.

Choose Fastmail

Email should feel normal and stay focused.

  • You want custom-domain email, aliases, calendars and contacts without suite expansion.
  • Standard mail-client access and conventional interoperability matter.
  • Your threat model does not require Proton's privacy architecture.

Choose Proton

Confidentiality should shape the whole stack.

  • Reducing provider access to business data is a first-order requirement.
  • You want encrypted mail, calendar, drive, password management, VPN or related privacy services together.
  • You accept some workflow constraints in exchange for the privacy model.

Poor reasons

Do not decide from slogans.

“Private” does not automatically mean operationally suitable. “Simple” does not automatically mean secure enough. Map the threat model, client requirements, shared workflow and exit process before choosing.

Keep the current provider when

The current setup is authenticated, documented and creates no meaningful privacy or workflow deficit. A migration with no solved problem is avoidable risk.

Verdict

Fastmail for normal business email with less baggage. Proton for a business deliberately reorganising around privacy.

When privacy is merely a preference, Fastmail is usually the easier fit. When privacy is a requirement, Proton is the more coherent choice.
