Choose Proton when privacy, custom-domain email and reduced provider visibility are real requirements.
Do not choose it as a moral accessory. A privacy purchase that breaks collaboration or compliance is still a bad technology decision.
What changes
Mailbox storage
Mail stored in Proton uses zero-access encryption. Messages between Proton users are end-to-end encrypted automatically.
External email
Ordinary mail to non-Proton recipients is not end-to-end encrypted by default. Password protection or compatible PGP is required.
Business suite
Plans can combine Mail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, VPN, Pass and Meet. This is an architecture decision, not an inbox skin.
Custom domains
The address remains portable when the organisation retains the registrar, DNS and recovery authority.
Strong fit
- Professional firms handling commercially sensitive communication.
- Small and mid-sized teams willing to standardise on a coherent privacy-led stack.
- Businesses that value encrypted storage, VPN and password management alongside mail.
Poor fit
- Teams deeply dependent on advanced Google Docs collaboration, desktop Office or a large add-on ecosystem.
- Organisations with retention, e-discovery or regulated archiving requirements that have not been validated.
- Anyone assuming encryption removes the need for endpoint security, recovery and user discipline.
